Farewell, Yasmin Ahmad

JULY 27, 2009 - This is to put on record the passing of Malaysia's top film-maker, Yasmin Ahmad, on July 25, 2009. Yasmin, born on July 1, 1958, was a multi-award winning film director, writer and scriptwriter. She became well-known to the international cinema world with her critically acclaimed movies about the quirks of Malaysian life, Sepet (2004), Gubra (2006), Mukhsin (2007), Muallaf (2008) and Talentime (2009).

She was also the executive creative director at Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur. Her television commercials and films are known their humour, wit and love stories that transcend cultural barriers.

Personally, I know her as a warm person whose casual jokes hide her seriousness about things close to her heart. She always had time for others, especially young film-makers and writers, many of whom worshipped her. She will always be a shining example to all in the advertising and film industry.

May she rest in peace.
